Leigh Street Shotgun House

San Antonio, 2019

Located behind a primary residence in the Lavaca Historic District in San Antonio, the Leigh Street Shotgun House is a thorough remodel of an existing four-room “shotgun" cottage . The existing three interior walls separating the rooms were retained, but selectively cut away to promote sight lines along the length of the house, as well as allowing for increased daylight throughout. Cabinet and shelving units straddle the divisions between rooms to emphasize the continuity of the space, simultaneously preserving the distinct functional use of each room while deemphasizing the small scale of the house in general. The wood-siding exterior was restored to its historic condition, and the existing wood double-hung windows were reconditioned.
